Boron Production

Actual boron output worldwide was c.a 4 million tons in 2012 (1.9 million tons of B2O3). Regional distribution of actual boron production (by B2O3) reveals Turkey ranked top with a share of 47.2% followed by USA (27.6%), South America (15.8%) and Asia (9.4%).1

Boron ores are processed into concentrated (colemanite, ulexite, tincal) and refined (boric acid, borax, pentahydrate, borax dehydrate) boron derivatives and sold in domestic and international markets. Concentrated boron is produced in Emet, Kestelek and Bigadiç, while Kırka, Bandırma and Emet see the production of refined products.  Colemanite marks the top output among concentrated boron products, with borax pentahydrate and boric acid dominating the pack of refined products.  Ground colemanite production was started in 1998 followed by the start of boron oxide production in 2006 and calcined tincal production in 2008.
