Agriculture-Boron Research and Application Programme

 

Considering the global boron consumption, agriculture is one of the areas where boron is used widely. It is known that micronutrients such as boron are widely and systematically used in addition to main nutrients to improve agricultural yield and product quality, especially in developed countries of the agricultural sector. 

With the establishment of our institute, projects were started to investigate the effects of boron fertilization on yield and quality in the production of various products by taking into consideration the potential of boron use in agricultural production on the one hand and activities were carried out to perform production of boron chemical(Tarımbor), which may be used in the agricultural sector, at the pilot scale in our country on the other hand. In parallel to these activities, projects were carried out and "Turkey Boron Map" (Figure 1) was created to determine boron content of the agricultural lands of our country.

Start of production of the boron fertilizers (Tarımbor, EtiDOT-67), used in the agricultural sector, in our country and the lack of boron in nearly half of the agricultural lands of our country, as shown by the data of "Turkey Boron Map", led to the requirement for conduct of the research and application activities to be carried out in this field by a more systematic and effective method.

While 5% of the global boron consumption was realized in agriculture sector before 2011, this ratio has reached to the level of 15% approximately. In our country, however, the systematic habit of using boron has not yet developed in this sector. So far, there is no widespread application of boron on 25 million hectares of arable land owned by us. For this purpose, the "Agriculture-Boron Research and Application Program" was initiated within the framework of the protocol signed on 01.03.2011 with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM), which adopts policies in line with today's agricultural understanding and provides direct support to the agricultural sector in our country in the research and application of the use of boron fertilizer, in direct contact with the producer and consumer. With this program, it is intended to develop the priority products, determined by considering the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry strategies and economic contribution potential boron fertilizer application practices in the areas with economic value and share results at meetings like workshops, farmer days etc. to be organized and make them widespread.

 “Agriculture-Boron Research and Application Program” is carried out by the executive committee of the program consisting of representatives of both institutions. In the priority areas determined by the Executive Committee, calls are made and the project applications received within the scope of the calls are evaluated by the arbitral tribunal established by the executive committee. Taking into account the evaluations of the arbitral tribunal and the BOREN budget facilities, the program executive committee submits its opinions on the projects to the President of the Institute through the Research and Development Coordination Office. BOREN decides on support of projects and form of the support.
In this context, in order to ensure the systematic and effective use of boron in the agricultural sector; five calls have been made so far, starting with the most sensitive products to use boron. Total 44 projects have been submitted so far and 19 projects have been supported so far.

As a result of boron application, yield increases were achieved at the level of 10-20% in sunflower (Thrace Region), 6-15% in sugar beet (Konya, Afyon, Karaman and Eskişehir), 5-19% in potato (Niğde and Nevşehir Region), 25-30% in hazelnut (Samsun, Ordu, Giresun and Trabzon) and 8-22% in tea (Eastern Black Sea Region) through the projects initiated in the scope of the first two calls in the scope of the program. Yield increases were achieved at the level of 3-19% in corn (Adana and Osmaniye), 12.5-21% in wheat (Konya, Karaman, Eskişehir and Ankara), 20-36% in industrial tomatoes (Manisa, Bursa, İzmir, Yalova and Balıkesir) 1-2% in greenhouse tomatoes (Antalya Region) in the scope of the projects supported under the third call. In the Vineyard (İzmir, Manisa and Denizli) project, which started within the scope of the fourth call, 20% yield increase was achieved. In the Pistachio (Gaziantep and Urfa Region), cotton (Adana, Hatay, Şanlıurfa and Kahramanmaraş), apple (Isparta) and carrot (Beypazarı) projects, survey studies were completed and the projects were terminated at this stage since boron deficient areas could not be determined. The Olive (İzmir and Muğla Region) project, initiated within the scope of the fifth call, is still continuing and, according to the analyses, the boron deficiency in the mentioned region is around 40% of the lands and 80% of the plants as little or less. The Olive (İzmir and Muğla Region) project will be completed in 2019.
