It was found that boron salts were used for the first time in Tibet 4,000 years ago and it was used by Babylonians for melting valuable products and by the Ancient Greek and Roman communities for arena cleaning by sprinkling on the floor. In 875, however, Arabs made drugs from boron salts for the first time.

The Modern Boron Industry began in the 13th century when Marco Polo brought it from Tibet to Europe. In 1771, Sassolit was found in the hot springs in the Tuscani region of Italy. Boric acid production started in Italy in 1830. In the same period, the first borax mining started in Chile in 1852. Later, the US became the first country to meet the world's boron requirement by finding and operating the deposits in Nevada, California, Caliko Moutain and Kramer.

In our country, however, it is known that the first business started with the granting of 20 years of operating privilege to a French company in 1865 in accordance with the  Maadin Regulations  issued in 1861.

Eastern Roman Empire of boron mineral in Turkey is known and it is estimated that since it is used since the transfer of the East-Roman Empire. The first boron mineral deposits were found in Sultançayırı region of Balıkesir-Susurluk district. Ore is a calcium salt and has been operated by foreign companies as Pandermit for a long time.

In 1861, the first "Maadin Regulation" was issued and in accordance with the provisions of this regulation, the French "Desmazures" company was granted the privilege of Borax Mine Operation in 1865. In 1887, the British company Boraks Consolidated Ltd. settled in this region and continued its operations until 1958 by obtaining operating privilege as well.

Until 1927, 624 foreign companies were granted concessions and most part of these companies were nationalized and new privileges were not granted to the foreign company in 1944.

Local organizations such as MTA and Etibank obtained their exploration licenses in 1935 with the Laws numbered 2804 and 2805 and they disseminated their exploration activities after the World War II. The colemanite deposits were found in Bigadiç in 1950 and in Mustafa Kemal  Paşa region in 1952 and colemanite deposits were encountered in the locality of Hisarcık and Hamamköy during the lignite surveys in MTA Institute Emet-Kütahya region in 1956.

Two years later, Etibank was granted the operating privilege of these deposits in 1958.

The British Boraks Consolidated Ltd., having the Borax deposits in Balıkesir Region, started to take over Kırka-Sodium salt deposits from the private miners when it saw that the Borax ores increased since 1965  and operated these deposits under the name of Turkish Borax. Due to legal deficiencies in the field transfer transactions, the privilege of the Turkish Borax has decreased and the operating privileges of these fields have been granted to Etibank as from 1968. In 1970, the establishment of the facilities began.

Our boron mines, which were initially operated by foreign companies, were started to be operated by Etibank and some small-scale local companies after the transfer of the privileges of foreign companies to the state in 1968. All activities in the fields of mining, investment, production and marketing are carried out by the General Directorate of Eti Mine Operations as from the decision on operation of the boron mines by the state in 1978.
