HISTORY OF BOREN

Institute's Structure » History

National Boron Research Institute, BOREN, was established on June,18, 2003 under the authority of Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources by the law numbered 4865 in order to organize and sponsor the scientific studies to widen the consumption areas of boron products as well as the scientific studies for the development of new boron products, to give technical support and/or to sponsor the public and/or private companies already consuming boron products in solving their problems in process, quality and environmental areas, support R&D studies of such companies as well as the Universities and Reseach Centers.

Institute started to organize by the assignment of the Institute President  and 1st Period Board of Directories at 7th of September, 2003 and the first activities were carried out in an office at Aerospace Engineering Department , Middle East Technical University (METU).

The active studies of the Institute were started dating from April 2004 in a part of the Central Laboratory Building, METU. The studies were executed at this building till August 2007 and then the Institute moved to the 10th floor of General Directorate of Electrical Power Resources Survey and Development Administration (EİE) building.

BOREN performs R&D studies with public and private research foundations, private firms and universities. The institute does not carry out internal studies except the pilot plant constructed at the laboratory allocated by the Chemical Engineering Department, METU.

The Institute initiated projects and provided opportunities for an important number of projects to be completed successfully since 2004, the date at which BOREN initiated its activities. Since 2004, 131 projects were started 64 of them were completed successfully and 64 of them are still continuing.

Among the products developed from the completed projects, Agricultural Boron (Tarım Bor), Wood Boron (Ahşap Bor), Boron Nitride, Zinc Borate and Cellulosic Insulation Material were industrialized. Boron Added Cement (Boron-Cement), Sodium Borohydride, Trimethyl Borate, Boron Added Ceramic are the products which are ready for industrialization. Boron Added Plastics and Wood Panels with Improved Fire Resistance, Boron Nitride Coatings, Magnetic Field Measurement Sensors, Boron Doped Magnets, Boron Doped Super Conductors are the products on which researches have been continuing.

Boron-Cement was produced at two separate plants and all tests were completed. The product was used in concrete road application and channel coating. Boron-cement provides production of concrete with superior properties in terms of the parameters such as concrete strength, heat of hydration, water and gas permeability and neutron absorption. A new Turkish Standard on Boron added Active Belite Cement, TS 13353, was approved and its public prices was formed. This product is ready for industrial production and for use in concrete sector.

As a result of the studies and projects executed by BOREN, 11 patent applications have been completed, 1 product standard have been composed, and a prize has been won on an equipment that was developed. Among the patent applications, 3 of them received a patent certificate.

The Institute supported scientific meetings, congress and conferences besides organizing 2 National Boron Workshops and 2 International Boron Symposiums during its 6 years of progress.
