    Agriculture-Boron Research and Application Programme


    Agriculture stands as one of the top industries seeing high boron consumption around the globe. Particularly in countries enjoying a sophisticated agriculture industry, it is known that micro-nutrients such as boron besides primary nutrients are widely and systematically employed to raise agricultural productivity and product quality. However, the habit of systematically using boron in this industry has not been established yet.  

     

     

    Immediately following the set-up of our Institute, and in consideration of boron utilization potential in agricultural production, various projects aimed at exploring the impacts of boron fertilization on efficiency and quality in cultivating various crops have been launched while campaigns for producing the agricultural boron chemical (Tarımbor) in our country on pilot scale have been run. In parallel to these initiatives, a project for identifying the boron content of our country's agricultural lands has been run to develop the "Boron Map for Turkey" (Figure 1).

    As the production of boron-doped fertilizers employed in agriculture (Tarımbor, EtiDOT-67) was started in our country, and as data of the "Boron Map for Turkey" reveals boron deficiency in almost half of arable lands througout the country, the need to a more systematic and efficient method of research and implementation in this area has occurred.


    Accordingly, upon meetings with the General Directorate of Agricultural Researches and Policies (TAGEM) under the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Stockbreeding, it was agreed to plan initiatives relating to boron-doped fertilization under a specific scheme and coordinate research and implementation processes under such scheme, leading to the execution of a protocol on 1 March 2011 by and between two organizations for developing the "Agriculture-Boron Research and Implementation Scheme" and running the projects under this scheme in consideration of the priorities defined.


    "The Agriculture-Boron Research and Implementation Scheme" is run by the scheme executive board comprised of the representatives of both organizations. Calls are made in priority fields designated by the Executive Board, and project applications received are assessed by a panel of assessors composed by the executive board. Having considered the assessments of the panel and BOREN's budgetary means, the scheme executive board conveys its opinions on projects to the Coordination Office for Research and Development, and to the Institute Management. BOREN's Board of Directors make its decision on supporting the projects and form of such support.


    In this respect, in order to ensure the systematic and efficient use of boron in agriculture, 3 project calls were launched in 2012, primarily for products that are most sensitive to boron use.

    Projects Supported     

    Within the scope of the scheme, our Institute launched three calls on its web site specifying application dates of 27 March 2012, 1 July 2012 and 26 November 2012 respectively with a view to ensuring extensive and systematic use of boron in agriculture in favour of economical added value.
    During the periods granted, a total of 23 project applications were filed with our Institute, primarily from the Research Institutes and Stations of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Stockbreeding, and from the various universities' Faculties of Agriculture. It has been deemed appropriate to support and launch the below-listed projects presented upon call.
